What is True Wireless?

You’ve surely seen them by now. They’re pretty much everywhere these days. True Wireless earbuds come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Klipsch makes some pretty stellar ones if we do say so ourselves.

But, what does the term “True Wireless” actually mean?

We’ll walk you through it.

According to C2wireless.com, “True Wireless headphones refer to Bluetooth earbuds that have neither cords nor wires between them, as well as no wired connection to a given audio source.”

Essentially, earbuds without cords that only have a connection via Bluetooth technology. All of the function of the earphones is built into the earbuds themselves, including the controls and battery.

“True wireless is a stereo Bluetooth protocol that allows your device to stream stereo content to two separate wireless devices,” explains Klipsch Engineering Program Manager Andrew Doerr. “These are most commonly seen as in-ear headphones.”

How Does it Work?

When you think about the concept of True Wireless, you assume it’s just a Bluetooth signal connecting to your mobile device.

It’s actually a bit more complicated. “True Wireless works by using three Bluetooth chip-sets together,” Doerr says. “Typically, the chip in your phone connects to a single chip in the headphone or speaker product. But, with True Wireless, the chip in your phone connects to both chipsets in your headphones, eliminating the need for the connecting wire.”

How Does True Wireless Work with Bluetooth?

Doerr says there are two main True Wireless connection solutions. For your reference, we’ll use the T5 II True Wireless earphones as an example.

Relay: Your Earphones have a Primary and Secondary side. Your phone passes a stereo signal to the Primary earpiece. The Primary side keeps one side of the stereo signal and relays the other to the Secondary side. Klipsch T5 II True Wireless earphones use this method:
